Alice Springs Youth Boot Camp Launches

Pathfinders has officially launched the Alice Springs Youth Boot Camp, delivered in partnership with Quality Construction and Maintenance (QCM), marking an important step in expanding our work with young people in the Northern Territory.

This program forms part of the Northern Territory’s Youth Justice Boot Camp initiative, which provides a structured, community-based alternative to detention for young people aged 10 to 17 who are on bail or have been found guilty of an offence. These programs are designed to address the underlying causes of offending behaviour, while building skills and pathways toward long-term positive change.

The Pathfinders model in Alice Springs brings this vision to life through a work readiness and trade skills camp, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience across construction and trade areas such as carpentry, painting, and mechanics. Delivered alongside QCM, the program creates a practical and engaging environment where young people can develop real-world skills while being supported within a structured and therapeutic framework. The Boot Camp has been intentionally designed to go beyond activity-based engagement. It integrates behavioural support, reflection, and relational practice into a four-week model that encourages young people to better understand their actions, build resilience, and develop stronger decision-making skills. The program also aligns closely with Pathfinders’ broader therapeutic direction, including the implementation of the Sanctuary Model, ensuring a consistent and trauma-informed approach across all areas of practice.

Importantly, the program reflects the broader objectives of Youth Boot Camps across the Northern Territory.

These include supporting young people to:

  • build life and social skills
  • strengthen cultural identity and community connection
  • engage in education, training, and employment pathways
  • take accountability for their actions
  • reduce reoffending and support long-term change

A significant amount of work has gone into establishing the program, including the development of facilitator resources, program structure, and clear practice guidance to support delivery. The recent addition of a new assistant facilitator has also strengthened the staffing model, improving continuity and flexibility as the program continues to grow.

Looking ahead, planning is already underway for the next intake of the Alice Springs Youth Boot Camp. Youth Camp 2 for Term 2 will run from 23 April to 15 May 2026 and will continue to follow the structured four-week model throughout the year.
