Last Wednesday, Pathfinders staff took part in Youth Homelessness Matters Day (YHMD) 2024, joining forces with local young people and community service providers in Port Macquarie. The event was a touching demonstration of community solidarity, as individuals came together to raise awareness and show support for our nation’s youth facing homelessness.
Throughout Australia, similar events provided the opportunity for young people to access essential support services, elevate community awareness, and bravely share their lived experiences.
Youth Homelessness in Australia
Did you know that in 2022–23, over 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years sought assistance from homelessness services alone? Shockingly, nearly half of these individuals experienced mental ill-health, while over one third endured domestic and family violence.
Tragically, the overwhelming majority of these young people urgently required short- or long-term accommodation. Yet, due to a lack of capacity, many were turned away, highlighting the dire challenges confronting youth experiencing homelessness.
The fundamental purpose of YHMD is to shine a light on the often overlooked and misunderstood experiences of young people facing homelessness in our community. Through unified efforts, we advocate for government action to address this critical issue nationwide.
For many young people, homelessness is not a choice but the only option they have. Stemming from systemic failures that disproportionately affect the most vulnerable cohorts, it is essential to acknowledge that their needs are unique. As such, support must be tailored to ensure the best possible outcomes for success.
Pathfinders support the Yfoundations petition urging the Australian Government to establish a National Plan for Child and Youth Homelessness and Housing. Such a plan requires funding from both Australian and State Governments to implement sustainable solutions and provide the necessary support to young individuals in need.
